Week of Prayer for Christian Unity – Jan. 24

For many years, congregations from this part of Pinellas County have gathered on this week to observe the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. It falls between the observance days of the Confession of Peter [January 18] and the Conversion of Paul [January 25]. It is our honor to host this event in 2019.

We will worship together with brothers and sisters in Christ from many different congregations. There will be a joint choir to support our song. Kirk Ray Smith, President/CEO of Religious Community Services will be our speaker. Join us for this special time of worship.

Labors of Love, A Prayer of Hope

At Prince of Peace, July is often a month where we are taking off in many directions. That blessed and busy VBS for 2018 is behind us. Friends are coming and going, visiting family or just getting away. Youth are off to the Houston Youth Gathering or to camp; children are off to camp, too. And while so many are on the move, we will welcome our new parish musician.

But in this newsletter, you will see how God has blessed us in our serving and how we are planning for labors of love in Christ Jesus in weeks and months ahead.

There is something more we must ponder in these steamy days of summer as we celebrate our nation’s birthday.

In past weeks, the world around us often seems to be roiling with controversy. To be sure, the issues of immigration are challenging. But in a land that has extended arms of help from the Marshall Plan to assistance with AIDS relief in Africa to heath care training by our armed services in obscure corners of the world, the recent actions dividing families do not seem to be consistent with that humanitarian spirit. As Christians, we follow our Lord’s lead in caring for the poor, the homeless, the helpless.

To be sure, there are many sides to these stories. I encourage us to voice our feelings to our representatives. We also devote ourselves now to prayer for our President and our representatives – for productive negotiations and positive actions that will calm the waters and bring justice for all. We pray that they may lay aside partisan differences and pull together in a direction that is good for all.

Below is a prayer of Luther that may be helpful in these days:

“Lord, grant that anger or other bitterness does not reign over us, but that your grace, genuine kindness, loyalty, and every kind of friendliness, generosity, and gentleness may reign in us. Amen.”

Service of Christian Unity

November 8 at 6:30pm, Christians from our community will gather together at Oakhurst United Methodist Church at 13400 Park Boulevard Seminole, FL for a time of prayer and worship. Following all of the publicity and division that happens during election seasons, this will be a time free from political language, division, and anxiety as we focus on the prayer of Jesus that all of His followers might be one.

Join us for a time of healing, a time of rejoicing that Jesus is Lord, and a time of focusing once again on seeking God’s kingdom and will here on earth.

(Please no partisan political conversation, representation, or manifestations during this time of worship.)
