What is WELCA?
WELCA stands for Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. We are part of the churchwide ELCA as well as part of the Florida-Bahamas Synodical Women’s Organization. All women are welcome to participate in conference, synod-wide, and churchwide meetings of the organization. At Prince of Peace, WELCA operates primarily through circle meetings, accomplishing ministry in many ways.
Membership: If you are a member of Prince of Peace and female, then you are a member. If you are not a member of Prince of Peace but are interested in the program and purpose of WELCA, then you are also automatically a member of WELCA. We welcome you!
Through our Women of the ELCA circles, the women of Prince of Peace Lutheran are called to:
Grow in our faith
Serve others, especially women and children in need and
Promote fellowship with other women in our community, our city, and our state.
Our four circles gather together each month for Bible study and fellowship. You are invited to join them.
- Elizabeth Circle meets on the second Monday at 10:00 am
led by June Litzman (593-0220)
- Miriam Circle meets on the second Monday at 7:00 pm
led by Linda Greilick (595-9623),
- Naomi Circle meets on the first Monday at 10:30 am (beginning in October)
led by Claire Thompson (733-0419)
- BOLD Women (now organizing) is led by Denise Baringer
All circles meet September through June in the Parish Hall unless a special event is planned. For summer (July and August), check the bulletin or the office for the modified schedule.
Our Bible study is based upon the series provided each September through June in the Women of the ELCA monthly magazine “Gather” though other studies can be utilized.
Our service activities include making quilts and kits for Lutheran World Relief, collecting supplies for various groups (Pack-A-Sack, RCS, Here We Grow, Kimberly Home, migrant workers, Lutheran Services Florida, needy families, and the homeless), and creating decorations for luncheons. Monetary donations are provided to Mission Outreach, Church Women United Least Coin, PoP Youth, Lutheran World Relief, and to our organization for Thank Offering, Fall Gathering scholarships, and regular offerings.
Special events include two events in the Parish Hall consisting of luncheon get-togethers, a program, and the handling of any business that is to be presented to our membership. These occasions are the Advent Tea in December and our Spring Gathering in early spring.
Board members are elected. Currently serving are: Virginia Higgins, President; Sandra Pomering, Vice President; Lois Schultz, Secretary; and Debra Lantz, Treasurer.
The churchwide Women of the ELCA (WELCA) holds a Triennial Convention/Gathering and the Florida-Bahamas Synodical Women’s Organization holds an annual Fall Gathering/Convention. All women are invited to attend and to participate in bible study, stewardship, and fellowship.
We invite you to join us in our MISSION: To mobilize women to act boldly on their faith in Jesus Christ.
